Obituary

Violet Rietze, age 92 of Valley City died Wednesday Dec. 16, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Valley City, one day after what would have been the 70th anniversary of her wedding.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2PM Wednesday Dec. 23, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valley City with Rev. JoAnne Moeller officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.  Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery near Valley City in the spring.

Violet Mae Maine was born March 12, 1923 in Luverne, ND to Alonzo and Minnie Maine, one of seven children.  She attended school on Valley City and lived there all her life except for a brief time when she worked in Minneapolis, MN.

Violet was united in marriage to William (Bill) Rietze on December 15, 1945 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Valley City.  They resided on the family farm and continued to farm until 1980 when Bill retired from farming.  Bill passed away on February 23, 2001 and Violet continued to make her home on the farmstead.  She moved into Valley City in 2005 and made The Legacy Place her residence in June of 2012.

She looked forward to her weekly trips to try her luck at BINGO and an occasional bus trip to the casinos.  She also enjoyed reading magazines, newspapers, and working jigsaw puzzles.

She is survived by a son David, Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter Kathie (John) Kopp, Hurricane, Utah; two grandsons, Kelly and Kris Kopp, Lisbon, North Dakota; two great-grandsons, one sister Marcella Richards, Kelso, Washington, and nieces and nephews.  Violet was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Esther (Evenson) and Ruby (Rietze), and three brothers, Leonard, Chet, and Melvin.

The family would like to express the great appreciation to the staff at Legacy Place for their excellent care of Violet for the past years.  They would also like to especially acknowledge the frequent visits and help from sister-in-law Mariann Maine, and sister Marcella "Sissie" Richards over the years.
