Obituary

Vernon Aase, age 84, of Valley City, ND, died Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.  A memorial service will be held Friday, April 26, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Valley City.  There will be a time of visitation on Thursday at the church from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery near Valley City, later this spring.

Vernon Elroy Aase, the son Jens Oscar and Agnes (Olstad) Aas, was born May 26, 1934 in Valley City, ND.  He was baptized and confirmed into membership at the Sheyenne Valley Lutheran Church near Kathryn, ND.  Vernon grew up on the family farm in Nelson Township of Barnes County, North Dakota. He attended country school in rural Nelson Township.  As a teenager, he worked for area farmers.

January 8, 1957, Vern enlisted in the Army.  He served 15 months with the 538th Artillery Battalion in Neu-Ulm, Germany.  His honorable discharge took place at Ft. Sheridan, IL on December 17, 1958 and he returned to Valley City.

On November 19, 1960, he married Lois Knutson at First Lutheran Church in Valley City.  The couple made their home in Valley City where Vernon did carpentry work, which he did until his retirement.  He enjoyed collecting various things, making leather goods (especially harnesses and saddles).  He loved to attend auctions and flea markets.  Vern was a member of the Valley City AmVets, the American Legion and the Valley City Eagles Club.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Doris Aas, Carol Nelson, and Gloria Knutson; and a brother-in-law, Don Knutson, all Valley City, ND.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lois; 5 brothers, James, Kenneth, Alden, David and Gaylen; and a sister, Delphine Anderson.
