The funeral service for Oscar E. Hagen, 90, Valley City, ND, will be held in the Lerud-Schuldt-Mathias Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, August 7 at 10:00 AM.  Visitation will begin an hour prior to the service Monday morning.  Oscar passed away, with his daughters by his side, at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City on August 2, 2017, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.  He will be buried in the ND Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND, Monday afternoon.

Oscar Edwin Hagen was born June 2, 1927 in Butte, ND to Olaf and Ella (Bergene) Hagen.  He attended Velva, ND public school.  On September 17, 1945, Oscar entered the US Army.  He served in Japan and Korea before his discharge on December 30, 1946.

After returning to the states, he married Mariann Lang, they had three children.  They made their home in Valley City, ND.â  Oscar worked for the ND State Highway Department for 40 â½ years.  After retiring in 1988, he found more time to enjoy his hobbies.  He was a bowler, having at one time bowled in 5 leagues at once.  Oscar took up golfing, loved to fish and spend time at the lake.  Not a day went by that he didn't log the high and low temperature in his weather books.  He was also an animal lover and had a special place in his heart for cats, especially Ole, the last cat to live with him while he was at the care center.

He was a member of the VFW, Eagles Club, American Legion, and AmVets.

Oscar is survived by his two daughters, Sandy (Peter) Farrelly of Redding, CA and Karen Hagen of Fargo, ND and a sister, Iris Lindahl of Santa Rosa, CA.â  Although Oscar didn't have a large family, he had an extensive "adopted" family that will miss him.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Hal; sister, Ruth Tkachenko; and brothers-in-law, Rusty Tkachenko and Don Lindahl.
