Norton A. Tangen, age 92, of Valley City, ND, died Thursday, October 12 th at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 19 th at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Lerud Schuldt Mathias Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday morning. Interment will be in Waldheim Cemetery, near Kathryn, ND.
Norton Allen Tangen, the son of Nils and Annie (Monson) Tangen, was born September 9, 1925 near Kathryn, ND. Norton grew up and attended high school, graduating from high school in Kathryn. He served two years in the United States Army from 1945 until 1947. Nort married Kathleen M. Smedshammer of Litchville, ND in June of 1947. They had three children, Peggy, Scott and Paul. Nort was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Barnes County Highway Department. During this time, he joined the ND Army National Guard and became a full time technician in 1956. He advanced to Shop Chief at the O.M.S in Valley City and retired in 1985 with the rank of Master Sergeant. Nort was a member of the Valley City American Legion, AmVets, 164 th Infantry Association, Valley City Eagles Club and Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
Norton is survived by his children, Peggy (Jeff) Pfingsten, Fargo, ND, Scott (Mary) Tangen, Valley City, ND and Paul (Leevon Sauvageau) Tangen, Fargo, ND; six grandchildren, Darin (Stephanie) Wawers, Detroit Lakes, MN, Brian (Mary) Tangen, Gretna, NE, Chad Tangen, Valley City, ND, Kari (Matt) Chitty, Columbus, GA, Carly Jo Tangen, Fargo, ND and Erik Tangen, Chisolm, MN; 13 Great-grandchildren; two sisters, Muriel and Enid; many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Norton was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Neil Tangen and other extended family members.
