Luverne Johnson, age 92, of Valley City, ND, died Saturday, January 7th at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on January 13th at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Lerud Schuldt Mathias Funeral Home Chapel and one hour before the service on Saturday morning. Interment will be in Memory gardens Cemetery near Valley City in the spring.
Luverne Lillian Holm was born on August 17, 1925, to Henry and Katie "Karen" (Thoreson) Holm in Norma Township. She grew up on the family farm near Cuba, ND. Luverne was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Fingal, ND. She attended school in a two-room school at Cuba and graduated from Valley City High School in Valley City, ND. She worked for Gambles Skagmo in Valley City following graduation. Luverne married Clifford Johnson of Fingal on September 25, 1944 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Valley City. They farmed near Enderlin, ND for 12 years until they moved to her dad's farm near Cuba for 10 years. They moved to Fingal where she and her husband purchased the Creamery. In 1979, they moved to Valley City. She worked at the Sheyenne Memorial Nursing Home and helped manage the creamery. She later worked as a nurse's aide at Mercy Hospital for 10 years then at Sheyenne Care Center for nearly 10 more. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, Cuba Homemakers, and Leader of the Norma Snip N Tucks 4-H Club. Clifford died in May 1989. Luverne enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. The highlight of retirement was to go dancing with her special friend of over 20 years, Virgil Warner.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda (Bob) Olauson and Peggy (Tim) Buchholz; two sons, Eugene (Patty) Johnson and Keith (Kay) Johnson; two daughters-in-law, Jean Johnson and Rosemary Johnson; 12 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren. She also leaves two special grandchildren, Garrett and Linda Hoff and their 3 children; along with special friends Gordan and Virlyn Hoff.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford; sons, William and Donald; grand children, Michele and Marvin Olauson and Tim Johnson; a great grandchild, Jordan Johnson; her parents; 4 brothers; 4 sisters; and her very special companion, Virgil Warner.
