Ambrose Steidl, age 92, of Fingal, ND, died Sunday, January 22 ^nd at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 28 ^th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fingal, ND. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. A rosary service will be held at 7:00 PM Friday evening at the church. Interment will be in in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in the spring. Funeral arrangements by the Lerud Schuldt Mathias Funeral Home of Valley City.

Ambrose Eugene Steidl was born July 25, 1924, the 11th child of 13 to Theresia (Schlegel) and Joseph Steidl of Fingal, N.D. He attended grades one through three in Fingal, four and five at Lucca School, then returned to Fingal where he received his high school diploma. Ambrose farmed until 1946 when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served briefly, stationed in Japan. Upon his return, he met Chloris Kouschokowski, a teacher in the Fingal school. They were married on June 17, 1952. Continuing the family tradition, Ambrose and Chloris, with their sons Gary and Leon, made their livings on the family farm. In 2016, the State of North Dakota recognized the Steidl family farm as a Centennial Farm, having been in operation by the same family for more than 100 years. Ambrose loved his family and took great pride in watching his children, and then grandchildren and great-grandchildren, succeed. He especially loved to cheer them on, often loudly, during basketball games. In 2013, Ambrose lost his wife of 60 years. He remained on the farm afterwards, assisting his sons. After several battles with cancer, tenacious and good-humored to the end, Ambrose passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at age 92, on January 22, 2017. He will be remembered for his faith, love of family, and mischievous grin and wit.

He is survived by two sons, Gary (Carole) and Leon (Roxanne); son-in-law Charles (Diane Riggle) Crommett; a sister Pauline Klinger; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by 11 siblings; his wife, Chloris; his daughter, Charlene Crommett; and grandson, Bradley Crommett.
